About this deal

You probably know what’s on nearly every corner in every town. I’m going to clue you in, it’s not a bike shop. It’s a gas station, where more often than not they have an air hose. But if your bike tire is low and you have Presta valves that air hose is practically worthless without the little adaptor. Some Presta valve cores cannot be removed- Older Presta valves do not have removable cores. This can be a problem if you want to add puncture-resistant sealant to your tube, if the valve gets gummed up with dirt, or if the valve gets damaged. You can’t just remove and replace the core. It’s important to note that almost all modern Presta valves have removable cores. It is also easier to minutely adjust the pressure in a Presta valve – if you want to let some air out of the tyre, simply unscrew the valve stem and push down to deflate. Presta tubes also come with a plastic cap. I tend to keep this on to protect the valve. How do I deflate a tube with a Presta valve?

But if that is the case, and unless these screws are manufactured to incredible tolerances (they don't seem to be), then loctite would not be optional. Additional neat details include a 4mm hex shape in the bottom for holding them tight while you cinch up the collar. They also come with three different shaped rim plug pieces so you can choose the shape that gives you the best fit against the rim. All sizes get a slotted base that works with inserts so you don’t need to worry about your rubber rim protector making pumping up or deflating a pain. You get a valve cap with a core remover built into it and they use durable 7075 series alloy for strength. The collar is laser etched and flat sided so you can tighten it with a wrench but don’t overdo it or you’ll damage the rim/tape/seal rubber or all three. We've run through the differences and similarities between the Presta and Schrader valve now, so you should be able to handle this, but to recap: the Presta valve is skinny and pointed at the end, while the Schrader valve is wider, and rounded at the end. What kind of inner tube do I need?

the valve cap screw (with notches to enable grasping with nose pliers or with a dedicated tool), and You can replace the valve core separately. Schrader valves have removable cores. Most Presta valves made after 2017 also have removable cores. Older Presta valves do not have removable cores. To determine whether or not your Presta valve has replaceable cores, look for flat sections on the sides near the top of the valve. These allow you to unscrew the core. Presta valve tubes come in more shapes and sizes than Schrader for the mountain biker. For example, if you want an ultralight tube, you’re more likely to find one with a Presta valve. If you need a heavy duty tube, there’s probably a Presta model at your local shop.

Turn on the pump and start the pumping process to inflate the bike tires up to the desired pressure. As far as air retention, it comes down to the tube or the tubeless set up more so than the valve. “Both (valves) test similarly on air retention assessments,” according to Maxxis’ Brown. 5. Presta is just another confusing bike thing Bigger tyres naturally require bigger inner tubes. On the left is a 700×32-47C inner tube, while the right is a 700×18-28C. Simon Bromley/Immediate Media On the other hand, if you want to install Presta valves in the Schrader rim holes, reducers or washers may be needed to cover the additional area.

And the last consideration is valve length — tube manufacturers could easily make longer Schrader valves. 48mm Schrader valves exist, perhaps a valve extender could be used for additional length when needed. The cycling industry has produced aftermarket auto Schrader valves, responding to market demands and the broad standardisation of tubeless tyres. These work with tubeless tyres and offer most of the robustness and ease of inflation that is marked advantages of Schrader valves, compared to Presta. CO2 Inflator- This isn’t really a pump. CO2 inflators use a pressurized carbon dioxide canister to fill your tires. No pumping is necessary. The benefit of CO2 pumps over hand pumps is that they are lighter and faster to use. For those reasons, they are popular for racing. You do have to buy CO2 canisters. These can cause problems in wet weather. The CO2 cools as it exits the canister. In some cases, the pump can freeze to the valve. It’s possible to remove the valve core with the pump. To avoid this, pour some water on the valve to thaw it out.
